These are business-purpose loans and are not offered for personal, family or household use. Not available in Nevada, Vermont, North Dakota and South Dakota. If metal prices fall materially we may contact you about adding collateral or paying down the balance to keep the loan-to-value in range.
How this collateral is handled
Platinum and palladium bars and coins from recognized refiners are accepted. Because these markets are less liquid and more volatile, the advance may be set more conservatively than 65% — that is a judgement made at verification, not a penalty.
Worth knowing before you ship
- Thinner markets mean wider spreads and faster moves in both directions.
- The advance rate may be set below 65% for these metals.
- Mixing platinum or palladium with gold in one pledge usually gives a better overall outcome.
- Talk to us before shipping — this is the one collateral class worth a conversation first.

Valuation
How this is valued for lending
Both are valued on weight and fineness against their own markets, which trade separately from gold and from each other. The relevant difference is depth. These are far smaller markets, so quoted prices can be less consistent between sources and liquidating a large position takes more care. A lender therefore looks harder at form and recognisability here than with gold — a well-known refiner's bar is a materially easier proposition than an unfamiliar one.
The exposure
What moves against you
These metals are driven heavily by industrial demand, particularly from the automotive sector, which makes them behave differently to gold in a downturn. Palladium in particular has a history of sharp moves in both directions. Thinner markets also mean wider spreads between buying and selling. If these are your only collateral, the honest position is that terms will be more conservative than for the equivalent value in gold, and you should expect that rather than be surprised by it.
FAQ
Common questions
- How do I apply for a palladium loan?
- The same way as any other collateral here, and the palladium-specific part is the assessment rather than the paperwork. Tell us the form — bars, ingots or coins — the refiner marks, and the total weight. Recognized refiner bars in standard weights are the most straightforward and attract the least conservative treatment. These are business-purpose loans, so we will also need to understand the company borrowing and what the funds are for.
- Can I use palladium bullion as collateral for a commercial loan?
- Yes, and dealer inventory is the most common version of it. The practical caution is that palladium has a history of sharper moves in both directions than gold, so a facility against palladium is generally sized more conservatively — not because the metal is doubted, but because a more volatile collateral has less headroom before a ratio comes under pressure. Knowing that at the start avoids a surprise later.
- Is platinum treated differently to palladium?
- They are priced on separate markets that do not move together, so yes, in practice. Platinum has historically been the steadier of the two and its industrial demand is spread across more sectors. Palladium is heavily concentrated in automotive catalytic demand, which makes it more responsive to one industry's conditions. Where a holding contains both, that spread is genuinely useful — the two rarely fall together.
- Why are the terms more conservative than for gold?
- Market depth, not quality. Gold trades in enormous volume with tight spreads, so a lender can be confident of exiting a position quickly at a predictable price. Platinum and palladium markets are far smaller, spreads are wider, and liquidating a large position takes more care. That difference is priced into the arrangement. It is the honest reason, and any lender telling you otherwise is not being straight with you.
- Do I still get 65%?
- Possibly not. These markets are thinner, so the advance may be more conservative. We will tell you before you ship.
- Can I mix metals in one loan?
- Yes, and for platinum or palladium holders that usually produces a better result.
- Which forms are accepted?
- Bars and coins from recognized refiners and mints.
