Borrowing vs. Selling Your Metal

This is the real decision, and for a short-term cash need the arithmetic usually favors borrowing. Not always.

The fair case

What selling your metal genuinely does better

Selling wins on simplicity and it wins decisively. There is no obligation afterwards, no interest, no term, no ratio to monitor and nothing that can be called. You take the cash and the transaction is finished. If you no longer want the exposure to metal, or you need the money permanently rather than temporarily, selling is straightforwardly the right answer and borrowing against the holding would be a worse version of it.

The limit

Where the gap is

The gap is that selling is irreversible and it is taxed. You give up any future appreciation, and buying back later means paying a retail spread and whatever the market has done in between. A sale may also be a taxable event with consequences you should raise with your own tax adviser rather than with a lender. The honest framing is this: sell when you want out of the position, borrow when you want to keep it and need cash for a defined period. Which of those is true is a question about your plans, not about the products.

Our view

The honest verdict

If you were planning to sell regardless, sell — a loan just adds cost to a decision you had already made. Borrowing wins when the cash need is temporary and you still want the metal. And if you believe prices are heading down, selling is genuinely the better call.
